Position Summary

The President / CEO of the United Way of West Georgia is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the mission and all local United Way sponsored activities.  The President must be mission-driven yet be a collaborative and innovative leader and manager serving as the brand ambassador and champion of the United Way in our community which includes Troup County (with the cities of Hogansville, LaGrange and West Point), Meriwether and Heard counties.

We are looking for a leader who will develop positive relationships with current and future donors, United Way volunteers, agency directors and recipients of agency services and who will help us accomplish our mission. The mission of the United Way of West Georgia is to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of those who live in West Georgia. We are in the business of creating meaningful and tangible changes in our community.  


About the Organization

Community Relationships

The United Way of West Georgia is headquartered in LaGrange, Georgia. LaGrange is a rapidly growing manufacturing center and recreational community in west-central Georgia. It is located on West Point Lake just 60 miles southwest of Atlanta on Interstate 85. The organization serves the citizens of Troup County and portions of several other surrounding counties. The successful candidate will be expected to live within this service region.

The United Way of West Georgia is supportive of its agencies and is supported by local leaders, foundations and our business partners.

The United Way of West Georgia uses a very extensive and active allocation process which engages Board Members and a great number of community volunteers in visiting our partner agencies annually. That process has become a very important part of our public relations and membership development campaigns.

Strategic Management

The United Way of West Georgia asks its President to serve as the principal resource to the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee. The President will be expected to provide strong direction in policy formulation and strategic planning. The President will also work closely with governmental agencies to ensure that all United Way sponsored activities are aligned with the strategic directions set by local leaders. The United Way of West Georgia has established very close and fruitful working relationships with local political and faith-based leaders. These relationships should be maintained and enhanced.

Organizational Management

The President manages a small staff which includes an Office Manager, a Coordinator of Success-by-Six, a Vice-President for Finance and Resource Development as well as occasional contract personnel. United Way Board members and community volunteers have always played an active role in promoting our campaign and engaging in United Way sponsored activities and work projects.

The successful candidate will lead the staff in navigating relationships with our agency partners and financial contributors.

The individual serving as President / CEO also works closely with the Women’s Leadership Council, made up of Leadership Donors to United Way of West Georgia. The Women’s Leadership Council spreads awareness and raises funds to support efforts in improving early learning opportunities for the children in our community.

Financial Management and Planning

The President will be expected to work closely with the Vice-President for Finance and oversee preparation of the monthly financial reports as well as the annual budget. The Board of Directors will appoint one of its members as Treasurer. That individual will work closely with the President and Vice-President in conveying financial updates and information to the Board.

The successful candidate must demonstrate strategic leadership, be authentic, respect others, and work to develop trust throughout the community. This person should be able to earn the respect of all segments of our diverse community.


The President should be able to inspire and motivate the organization to higher levels of performance, efficiency and growth. This individual will cultivate a network of relationships throughout the service area promoting true collaboration and generating a passion for investing in the community.

Role Model

The President will supervise, mentor and coach United Way office staff setting high standards of integrity and caring. The successful candidate must have a demonstrated track record of promoting diversity.  The person selected for this role will be expected to demonstrate accountability for the entire organization.


Responsibilities and Essential Functions

Vision and Strategic Leadership:

Ensure that the organization’s mission and vision are articulated and shared with stakeholders.

Work closely with office staff and members of the Board of Directors continually refining operations to more closely adhere to the corporate mission and vision.

Culture and Staff Relations:

Supervise, mentor and coach office staff.

Collaborate with staff as a knowledgeable part of problem-solving team.

Serve as role model and effective leader for staff.

Create a corporate attitude that respects and embraces diversity in people and ideas.

Support staff in navigating relationships with agency partners, donors and state and local governmental personnel.

Collaboration with Board of Directors:

Partner with Board leadership to continually strengthen governance practices and to build a diverse Board.

Provide regular updates on operational, programmatic, and financial performance and outcomes.

Advance strategic plan for the organization in support of its mission.

Develop and present recommendations for annual business plans and budgets.

Financial Management and Planning:

Raise and manage money but, at the same time, be someone who obviously cares about others.

Manage monthly financial reports and annual budget planning.

Set goals and assure that annual campaign generates maximum financial support.


External Community Engagement and Fund Development:

Develop and implement a robust fund development plan.

Cultivate individual, corporate and foundation donors.

Motivate and manage high-profile volunteer leadership and senior executives.

Participate actively in community Strategic Planning process.

Be aware of what other community agencies are doing to serve those in need.

Work closely with civic organizations, churches and social service agencies.

Actively guide the annual allocations process.

Develop and maintain strong relationships with leaders of partner agencies.


Cooperative Job Description Revisions

The successful candidate and the Board of Directors will jointly refresh and revise the President / CEO job description during the first year of employment.


Education, Experience and Skills

Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred)

Proven leadership and fundraising experience, preferably with a non-profit or social service organization

Experience working with United Way or leading a similar type organization

Evidence of high ethical standards and unquestionable character

Demonstrated track record of community service, high-energy professional activity, and leadership

Strong interpersonal and communication skills

High level of experience and skill with office technology and social media platforms  

Demonstrated personal initiative


Comfortable working with “deadlines”
